This heavy dependence on exports exposes the economy to fluctuations in world demand. Taiwan's diplomatic isolation, low birth rate, and rapidly aging population are other major long-term challenges..small and medium-size enterprises have been the backbone of Taiwan’s economic dynamism. The commercial code is well developed, and open-market policies continue to facilitate the free flow of goods and capital. A sound legal framework provides strong protection of property rights and upholds the rule of law.Challenges remain in ensuring Taiwan’s long-term economic dynamism, and further efforts to enhance competiveness are vital to sustain growth in its export-oriented economy. Debates about the proper scope of government in welfare policies continue, and upward pressures on public spending keep the budget in deficit. The rigidity of the labor market and lingering corruption continue to hold back overall economic freedom.

Natural Resources

Taiwan has an array of natural resources, including minerals, aquatic products, vegetation and agriculture. Taiwan is situated near the ocean, which makes it a prime exporter of fish, shellfish and coral.

Tourism

Taiwan is a small island nation 180km east of China with modern cities, traditional Chinese temples, hot springs resorts and dramatic mountainous terrain. Taipei, the country’s capital in the north, is known for its busy night markets, Chinese Imperial art at the National Palace Museum and Taipei 101, a 509m-tall, bamboo-shaped skyscraper with an observation deck.

Most of Taiwan has beautiful warm climate all year round. You can leave your winter coat behind but are advised to bring an umbrella.

The north part of Taiwan belongs to sub-tropical climate zone, while the south part belongs to the tropical climate zone. Winters are warm and summers are hot and wet, with typhoons and thunderstorms. Because Taiwan is a relatively small island, the ocean breezes have a cooling effect so it never feels too hot. Please note that the high alpine areas like Alishan do get cold.

Required clothing

Prepare a coat and an umbrella. Wearing layers is a good idea.It generally feels warm during the day, and long-sleeve shirts are fine.
