Portugal is located in the southwestern region of the European continent.Spain is the neighboring country that lies on the northeastern side of Portugal. The Atlantic Ocean surrounds the country towards the western and southern regions. Portugal is situated in the lap of Iberian Peninsula.
The economy of Portugal is stable. The country has developed its service sector very much. It enlisted its name as a member of the European Community in the year 1986. The agriculture is also developed. Grain, tomatoes, olives, grapes, potatoes etc are the primary agricultural products. Some of the fast growing industries are textile and footwear industry; wood pulp industry, paper industry, oil refining industry; fish canning industry; rubber and plastic industry and so on. The export materials of the country are primarily machineries, chemicals, clothing, footwear, cork products, paper products and many more. Spain, Germany, France, UK, US and Italy are the main partners of Portugal in this export business.
Portugal's main natural resources include fish, forests (cork), iron ore, copper, zinc, tin, tungsten, silver, gold, uranium, marble, clay, gypsum, salt, arable land and hydropower.
Portugal has two main systems of higher education: The university system, which is the oldest, has its origins in the 13th century. It is composed of thirteen public universities, one public university institute, a public open university, and several private universities and university institutes.Applications are normally submitted in July or early August to the admission services in the applicant’s area of residence or through the Internet. Electronic applications are sometimes available via the website of the Directorate General for Higher Education (Direcção Geral do Ensino Superior). University education leads to the degrees of Licenciado (graduate degree), Mestre (Master's degree) or doutor (doctorate). A bacharel(Bachelor's degree) can also be awarded after three years' study. Polytechnic education leads to the graduate degrees licenciado and bacharel.
The Portugal national football team represents Portugal in international men's association football competition since 1921. It is controlled by the Portuguese Football Federation, the governing body for football in Portugal. Douro Valley, Lagos, Lisbon, Conimbriga Ruins, Igreja de Sao Roque, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Parque Nacional da Peneda-Geres, Torre de Belem etc are the interesting places to visit in this country.
a warm temperate, mediterranean climate with a distinct wet season in winter. During winter, Portugal experiences a similar temperature pattern to the Spanish coastal towns, i.e. average daytime maxima of about 16°C (61°F). However, the Portuguese resorts are much wetter, with only about 14 dry days on average. On average 5-6 hours of sunshine can be expected per day. A gradual warming-up process takes place during the spring months, daytime average maximum temperatures reaching up to 22°C (72°F) by May. The Atlantic-facing coast remains wetter than the Mediterranean-facing Spanish coast, with about 18 dry days per month. Daily sunshine hours number about 10 on average.
Lightweight cottons and linens during summer months; warmer medium-weights and raingear during the winter. Whenever and wherever you go, take a sweater for cool evenings.
